Drive-in food is cool again, thanks to Handline, a new Sebastopol, California, restaurant that’s the creation of Lowell Sheldon and Nancy Goble, the talents behind the popular Peter Lowell eatery.
The duo repurposed the former Foster’s Freeze location and tastefully updated it in wood and rusted steel, with a small dining space inside and long communal tables for dining on the patio outside. It’s a bustling, fun atmosphere where diners order at a walk-up window.
But don’t expect to find typical fast food here; Handline’s food is anything but. Its focus is on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, featuring coastal seafood and homemade tortillas. Fish tacos are a favorite –and a super delicious combination with fried rockfish, chipotle aioli, lime slaw and radish in a milled-corn tortilla. Fresh oysters are available, either raw or grilled; and there are two variations of ceviche. Other options include soups—like a yummy seafood stew—salads, and tostadas. And like any great drive-in, Handline offers California-style burgers, such as one called Inglewood, with St. Jorge cheese fonduta, iceburg lettuce, 1000 Island dressing and Calabrian pepper relish.
In keeping with the Foster Freeze heritage of the space, Handline kept the soft-serve machines. The ice cream is organic and oh-so good. Chocolate shake, anyone? Or, perhaps a cone for dessert?

Another nice touch to note: in addition to repurposing parts of the old building for its décor, the Handline owners had the old parking lot asphalt crushed and packed into wire “walls” that now line the new pavement-free landscape, and help dampen traffic noise.
Handline makes a delightful casual stop for guests at our Wine Country Inns. Most of us are located within a 30-minute drive—and all our Inns are convenient to top attractions and wineries here in Sonoma County. Come check us out!
