REVIEWS ABOUT WINE COUNTRY INNS

"Every perfect getaway starts with dreaming and planning. Wine Country Inns new website takes the leg work and the guess work out of your vacation planning, and lets you dream in pictures even before you go on a trip. A marvelous time-saving tool that is a pleasure to use and share." - Journalist Emma Krasov, San Francisco Bay Area CA (blog)

"I love the new Wine Country Inns Website. We are able to easily pick a region and see the room for each Inn at a glance, and if interested can jump directly to the web page for each Inn. Great Job!" - Cindy Redford, Sacramento CA

APPLEWOOD INN & RESTAURANT

Dominique Channell for Lonely Planet "Romantic Applewood, centered on a fountain courtyard and surrounded by flowering trees, feels like your own private Italian villa. Luxury touches include Frette linens, couples' showers and gas fireplaces. The inn's deservedly acclaimed restaurant is becoming a destination in itself."

Applewood Inn Restaurant Restaurant Guerneville CA Reviews Gayot March 2007 "Set your GPS for this backwoods dinner destination. It’s actually not hard to find, just over the river from the town of Guerneville, but it feels off the map, tucked into the secluded and peaceful Applewood Inn. The upstairs dining room makes a romantic venue, with cozy fireplaces and a solarium overlooking a trickling fountain and courtyard below. The cuisine melds French influences with California sensibilities, as borne out by the crab-packed profiterole paired with refreshing citrus salad, or the buckwheat crêpe, a delightfully square pocket with earthy duck innards with a sprig of micro greens. A beef filet with chanterelles, shallot confit, and endive please, though accompanying gnocchi seem superfluous. Better still: halibut with braised artichoke and wild mushroom ragoût. Happy endings include a sunburst of crème brûlée with cranberry or a simple chocolate ganache crêpe. Rather than chance a foggy drive on the windy road back to civilization, plan ahead and book a room at the inn---otherwise, you’ll envy those strolling off under the stars for a nightcap."

Zagat ( 24, 21, 21 ) "This rustic Tuscan-style romantic bed and breakfast inn with a restaurant and a rock fireplace tucked in the redwoods near Guerneville doesn’t get the hype of the Healdsburg stars, but it’s worth going out of the way for; all the elements are right, from the breathtaking setting and individualized attention each diner receives to the carefully crafted regional fare and terrific local wine list – what a delightful getaway spot for foodies."

Michelin Guide ( 2 forks ) "The Applewood Inn tucks into wooded backdrops a mile from Guerneville. This Wine Country B&B also welcomes guests for dinner in it’s barn-like dining room, complete with a vaulted and beamed ceiling and a soaring stone fireplace at either end of the room. Interpreted with French techniques and Italian accents, the California cuisine here fills the a la carte menu with the likes of seared foie gras with pain d’epice (spiced bread) French toast and red wine cherries and grilled filet of beef with a fricassee of trumpet royal mushrooms. Lighter fare highlights the bistro menu, offered Tuesday though Thursday. If you want to make a weekend of it, 19 individually decorated rooms are outfitted with such amenities as Italian linens, down comforters and WI-FI internet access.

Luxury Life & Style Magazine “Applewood Inn has mastered the art of wine country hospitality; spotlessly clean, with huge bathrooms, comfy robes, inviting fireplaces and sinfully soft sheets, it’s also quiet and unpretentious. Surrounded by redwood trees and with its own superb restaurant on-premise, the inn might tempt one to simply stay for the entire weekend with a good book and a better pinot for some company.”

San Diego Magazine "A hot destination for wine aficionados... The inn sets a marvelous table with an award winning wine list."

Passport Magazine “In Guerneville, head to the astounding Applewood where the fabulous food alternates between California and Italy, the wine list is divine . . . The rooms in their historic villa and several newer buildings are pretty fab too; you’ll think you’ve landed at an Italian villa in the middle of Northern California.

Wine Enthusiast “Rooms are spacious and luxurious to the point of sheer hedonism. The inn’s restaurant is a marvel. Almost anything off the menu is authentically Northern Italian meets-Sonoma and delicious, from the rack of lamb and Ribeye steak to the gnocchi. The wine list is a particular joy.”

Robb Report “A charming country inn hidden among the redwoods delivers five-star Amenities and an acclaimed California Provencal-style restaurant”

Food & Wine Magazine “Applewood Inn & Restaurant is an oasis of luxe just a short drive from the awe-inspiring Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve.”

Sunset Magazine - Named one of the West's Best Small Inns - “Dishes area a blend - very Northern California, very delicious - of organic, gourmet, innovative, and homey, served in a barnlike (a fancy clean barn, that is) dining room.”

Appellation Magazine “The 35 Chardonnays, 37 Pinot Noirs, 40 Zinfandels and dozens of Cabernets, Merlots and other varietals and blends make Applewood a good choice for those with a serious interest in Sonoma County Wines.”

Country Home Magazine “For relaxed country dining at its best, head to the cozy Applewood Inn restaurant in Sonoma County.”

Wine Enthusiast Magazine “Applewood Inn…sets a standard for small wine country inns.”

Gourmet Magazine “It’s their discerning eyes for both attic treasures and newfangled comforts that make Applewood both laid-back and luxurious.”

AVALON LUXURY INN

"The road to this charming Tudor-style bed-and-breakfast… passes through sunlit meadows and groves of trees, but you might be convinced that it actually travels back in time: with its magical themes and deeply forested, mist-shrouded setting, this property seems to emerge from a romantic legend." Best Places to Kiss

CASE RANCH INN

Case Ranch Inn has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, Image Magazine and Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

"Great accommodations and perfect company and atmosphere; breakfast was superb." Oscar & Martha, Palo Alto, CA

"Great B&B in Russian River area" TripAdvisor Member, New York City - Diana Van Ry and Allan Tilton are wonderful hosts at the Case Ranch Inn in the Russian River region of Sonoma County. The amenities were first rate as were the breakfasts served up by Diana each morning. The Inn is conveniently located for day trips to the ocean -- Bodega Bay and Fort Ross -- or to visit the vineyards of Sonoma and Napa counties. Highly recommended for a first class experience."

"Thank you Diana for a wonderful visit. You and Allan have done an outstanding job with everything. We will certainly recommend your B&B." Steve & JuliAnn, Dublin, CA

"Quiet quality in the Russian River Valley" TripAdvisor Member, Worthington,MA. - A great little inn centrally located in the Russian River Valley was a real find for my wife and I on a recent trip to California wine country. We really enjoyed the privacy and the quiet rural setting while at the same time having the ability to go out in many directions due to the central location. A wonderful place!"

"While in Scotland last year we thought we found the most quaint and first-rate B&B experience ever -- this place has changed our minds. We loved it here!" Robert & Marian, Draper, UT

"Great Stay at the Case Ranch Inn!!!" TripAdvisor Member, Hartland, WI - We stayed at the Case Ranch Inn during our trip to the Sonoma Wine Country in Feb-2005. Not only is the location central close to many wineries, the Inn itself and Diana are great. The beds were comfy, the rooms well-appointed, and the food was delicious. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!"

"The Garden Cottage is such a treasure! We absolutely adored our stay here - thank you very much!." Michelle & Wayne, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

"Outstanding Getaway!" TripAdvisor Member, Vallejo, CA - Our stay this year was even more memorable than last year. And that is saying a lot! The accommodations were perfect and the hospitality could not have been more warm and welcoming. We are looking forward to our visit again next Autumn. It is becoming a tradition. Thank you Diana and Allan."

“A Gem. I have stayed in many Napa/Sonoma hotels and resorts - but this is really what the ideal experience should be like. Very hospitable, clean, and well-thought, and relaxing. I almost feel like I'm in southern France with the backyard gardens, the lavender plants, and fountain.” California

“Quiet and Centrally Located. On our first visit to Case Ranch, we found our room to be sun-filled and cozy, the breakfasts yummy, fresh and healthy and our hosts most gracious.” Santa Fe, NM

“We normally stay in Healdsburg because we do not like to drive on rural roads after an evening of eating and drinking. This time we booked late so this inn was available and Diana was very helpful and encouraging on the telephone. The rooms are clearly the best of almost all the B&B's were we have stayed in the area. The area has some great restaurants as well (Stella's) so we never made it into Healdsburg-a first for us.” California

“Our very favorite inn!! We take our tandem road bike on cycling adventures throughout northern California, and we've tried a lot of inns in charming towns. The unpretentious Case Ranch Inn is our FAVORITE.” Lodi, CA

ENGLISH TEA GARDEN INN

"What a fabulous find this was on the internet ...better than we even anticipated. Many thanks to Cindy and Gus for sharing their beautiful home with us. The guest suite was so cozy and inviting we didn't want to leave. Don't miss Cindy's wonderful breakfast! Superb hospitality and wonderful recommendations for wineries, restaurants, etc. I hope the rest of our journey down the coast is as delightful as our stay here." - Nancy and George, Pompano Beach, Fl.

"To the best innkeepers of all: thanks for a fabulous stay. We couldn't have asked for better accommodations or better hosts. Can't wait to see you again soon." - Gretchen and Ivan, Phoenix, Az.

"Cloverdale is far enough away from the Bay Area to enjoy the peace and quiet of the area and yet close enough for a quick getaway. The Tea Garden is a wonderful place to stay. Cindy is a gracious hostess and an excellent cook. Our room was pretty and comfortable. Thank you!" - Anna and Howard, San Francisco, CA

"My stay here was brief, but I would have gladly stayed many more days if my schedule permitted. The lead I received about The Tea Garden Inn was that it was an extraordinary stay and value, which certainly is an understatement! I'll make another visit my business now that I've found this gracious locale and hospitality. Cindy and Gus, you've really created a home away from home. I intend to recommend this as an ideal vacation spot to all my friends." - Connie A., Scottsdale, Az.

As hurricane Francis bore down upon Florida we decided at the last minute to change our travel plans and spend the Labor Day weekend in Ca wine country. The Tea Garden Inn came highly recommended and from my first conversation with Cindy to the end of our stay-I can see why! We arrived as weary travelers-greeted warmly by Gus who showed us around. Our room was an instant haven-spacious, yet cozy; with a wonderful whirlpool tub. Every morning, we were treated to a elicious breakfast. Cindy and Gus made wonderful winery and restaurant recommendations. We enjoyed relaxing drives under a canopy of foliage, exploring the many "back roads" of Sonoma County. We depart relaxed and renewed, already planning our next trip. The Inn was BY FAR the nicest we have ever stayed in. We look forward to returning and are more than happy to recommend the Inn to friends." - David and Betty, Dallas, Tx.

"Breakfast here is like Christmas every day! Thanks again." - Christine, Tampa FL

"We were looking for a weekend getaway from work, familiar surroundings and the daily reminder of things to be done. We found it at The Tea Garden Bed and Breakfast Inn. Cindy and Gus welcomed us, recommended many fabulous options and made our stay just what we needed. We leave feeling rested, renewed and very satisfied. We will come back. Who can resist good food, great hospitality and comfortable quarters." - Michael and Judith, Napa, Ca

"The Cottage Rose Suite is a small piece of art. Every little corner has a soul and is as perfect as a thing of beauty can be. We were almost afraid of using something and disturbing the wholeness and spirit of the environment. Our stay was exceptionally comfortable and it has to do not only with the inn but also with the inn-keepers. Gus and Cindy are the sweetest and nicest, genuine and kind innkeepers we've ever met! They made us feel right at home, with their smiles and warm attitudes. Back in India (which is home for us) they say that a house will remain a house even if has the nicest, beautiful furniture or expensive decor but will be a "home" only if the owners are warm and sincere. Gus and Cindy give a new truth to this saying. Thanks for sharing your "home" with us! We will be back!!" - Mohit and Surkhi, Sunnyvale, Ca

"My husband surprised me with this trip to the wine country for my 55th birthday. It was our 1st adventure here and Cindys' suggestions for wineries and restaurants were superb! We had wonderful breakfasts & I bought the cookbook to recreate the breakfasts. Thanks for providing the relaxing setting-we really enjoyed the tub!" - Mary and Ron,
Phoenix, Az

"We have stayed in a lot of B&Bs and this is one of the best! We will return and recommend you to our friends. This was a relaxing way to finish off a 2400 mile road trip!"
-Jeff & Paula, Woodland Hills, Ca

"What a delightful experience! We decided to take a relaxing getaway and we found the perfect place! The Inn is absolutely wonderful. Cindy is the perfect hostess & Gus (over the phone) was so friendly. Loved the homey touches in the cottage. And the breakfast was delicious! Thanks so much to Cindy & Gus." Mirabeth & Dick, Riverbank, Ca

"What a wonderful way to celebrate our 1 year anniversary! Cindy and Gus, thank you so much for your wonderful (again) hospitality. You gave us great recommendations on transportation and places to taste & dine. I will definitely recommend your inn to friends coming to Sonoma. " -Dave & Toby, San Bruno, Ca

"As with previous stays, Cindy and Gus made this a terrific trip with their outstanding accomodations, great breakfasts and excellent suggestions for wine tasting, dining and other activities. We came, ate wonderful food, drank some outstanding wines, walked, enjoyed a wonderful car show and return home relaxed and re-energized. We look forward to staying with you again next year. Thank you for everything." -Stan & Maria, Aptos, Ca

"Cindy & Gus, we want to thank you so much for everything! I can't tell you how much we appreciated your down to earth hospitality and friendliness. The room was absolutely gorgeous! I'm just sorry our stay isn't much longer. Thank you again for our breakfast-puff pancakes. What a treat! We look forward to visiting you again and will indeed, tell our friends and families about your excellent accommodations. God bless you." -Chris and Cynthia, Morgan Hill, Ca

"Cindy & Gus, thank you for your wonderful hospitality! Gus was such a gracious "receptionist" when we arrived late and we immediately felt at home. Our room was beautiful and so comfortable. You thought of everything to make our stay here a real treat. Must also mention the delicious "gourmet" breakfasts. All in all, we will not forget this simply wonderful stay in our travels. " George & Vivian, Malden, Ill

"Gus and Cindy, thank you so much for providing such a wonderful place to get away and relax. The room is so cute & cozy. We loved it! Thank you for the great breakfast & hospitality. You helped make our stay in Sonoma a memmorable one." -Cynthia & Adam, Austin, Tx

" Down in S. Ca. where I live-the air is awful from 20 burning wild fires, my back yard is still in ruins from my awful neighbors' building project and my house is in the middle of my rehab project, so you can see why it is so nice to be in this calm, pampering room! It is so beautiful in Sonoma this time of year, I'm having a great week of R&R. Blush pink is such a pretty color and I matched my wine to my room-enjoying some Blanc d Noir champagne & the Jacuzzi!" -Jamie, Pacific Palisades, Ca

" As a spur of the moment decision, I decided to surprise my husband with a weekend getaway for his birthday and our 31st anniversary. Being a country boy, and his dad being a fiddler, I thought it would be great taking him to the Cloverdale Old Time Fiddle Contest. After pulling up B&Bs on the internet, I chose the English Tea Garden Inn. We have had a great 3 nights and great fiddle music. We agree with everyone else that the breakfasts were great, very different. My favorite was the broiled grapefruit and I don't even like greatfruit! That's how good the food was. The room was so cozy with fireplace and all the little extras and then some. Gus and Cindy have a great B&B and are great hostesses. We hope to return for another memorable stay. " -Bud & Fran, Rocklin, Ca

"Thanks, wonderful, warm and cozy little place to stay while visiting our Cloverdale family. Best wishes to you and all the friendly cats!" - Lee & Dan, Covolo, Ca

"After cycling from Healdsburg through the Alexander Valley in headwinds, we came upon this beautiful place with anticipation. When Cindy said she would upgrade us to the Cottage Rose, I was so pleased. When she opened the door & we stepped in, I cried-especially when I saw the hot tub. Our aching, tired muscles were soothed, our senses were filled with lavender and our spirits were rejuvenated by this romantic place. " -Lisa & Chris, Concord, Ca

We so enjoyed your Inn and the warm hospitality we received. I look forward to returning next year and will surely recommend to our friends that they stay with you. Also thank you for the early breakfast yesterday. It made the travel home so much better. Mark & Diane Smith

We wanted to say thank you for a wonderful overnight at Ingrid's cottage. It was indeed "koselig" to stay with you. Tusen takk for det! Just what the doctor ordered for our anniversary: a quiet place to sleep, a cozy fire, a yummy breakfast, and 18 hrs away from two lovable but very energetic teens (ours, not yours!). Carolyn Ockels & Steve King, San Francisco, CA

We stayed in the Rocky Terrace Cottage for four nights in late June. it was charming, lovely. private and quiet. There was great attention to all details in the cottage - beautifuly and very confortably decorated, fine toiletries and linens coffee, tea, CD system with assorted CD's and videos, and very clean. The breakfast was outstanding. We found the cottage to be quiet. We plan to stay there again. Lana & Gary Stachlowski, Portland, OR

Breakfasts were only perfect, you allowed us to use your washer for an emergency load, the hot tub soothed our aching muscles after long days of hiking, and the bed linens wrapped us into clouds of bliss each night. We loved the Jack London Park, and the Russian River-Pacific Ocean joining in Jenner was spectacular. Armstrong Woods levitated our senses, and we loved every calorie delivered by Glen Ellen's fine restaurants, as well as the Market. Mission accomplished! Your are a miracle worker. Thank you.

HIDDEN OAK INN

"I do not normally stay in B&B's but made an exception for our trip to Sonoma and it was the best decision we could have ever made. The Inn is absolutely charming and tastefully decorated. The wonderful innkeepers treated us like family and gave wonderful tips and advice on how to see the vineyards and great restaurants in their area. I highly recommend The Hidden Oak as we will be back again soon." - Tampa, FL

Everything that can be expected from a B&B is offered here. Our room was sparkling clean and full of all the little things you might forget when packing. Breakfast was excellent and the inn owners went to great lengths to ensure that we had a great visit. This inn is literally steps to Sonoma Plaza which is a beautiful town square. Very nice and well cared for classic craftsman style home perfectly transformed into a B&B!!" - Boston, MA

"I can't say enough great things about Hidden Oak and Valerie and Don. I stayed at Hidden Oak for 4 nights in June and was in heaven. The property and house are beautiful, comfortable and Valerie is very kind and accommodating. The room was spectacular, clean, fresh, pretty and very comfortable. Breakfast time was such a treat and Valerie made extra effort to accommodate my dietary needs.

"The atmosphere was just ideal. Comfortable and beautiful. The pool area was fantastic, and we were greeted the first night with a lovely glass of wine and a cheese plate. It does not get better than this. Valerie had a lot of good suggestions for dinner nearby, and we had fantastic experiences all around. I am eager to go back one day. If you have not been, you should go!!!!!!! I will always remember this part of my 10 day trip as the BEST part." - Baltimore, MD

"I don't see what anyone could want that's not to be found at the Hidden Oak. My wife and I wanted to stay in town, since the wineries close by 6pm and we wanted to have a place to go with a nice city atmosphere, great restaurants and bars to spend a late evening, all within walking distance of where we stayed. This hotel is a block and a half from the Plaza, just far enough to be totally quiet at night yet literally one minute from the heart of town by foot. There are only 3 rooms, and people seem to keep their own hours so we didn't see the other guests too often. Our room was huge and extremely comfortable. Breakfast was perfect to get something in the stomach before early morning drinking! Overall ... a gem." - Chapel Hill, NC

"My wife and I just spent 3 nights at the Hidden Oak Inn in Sonoma. I was quite skeptical, because I normally do not like B & Bs. However, due to the location of the Inn right near the Sonoma square, as well as the good reviews, I decided to give it a try. It was just great. The house and the rooms are gorgeous. The hosts are also very good. There is a great breakfast, and afternoon wine and cheese. You can also walk to 2 wineries from the Inn (Sebastiani, Ravenswood). We plan to return to the Hidden Oak on my next trip to wine country." - Vancouver, BC

Awesome! Everything was absolutely lovely. This is definitely the “best of the best”. Tracy CA

RAFORD INN

“Wonderful, tranquil, pristine, panoramic, vintage, hospitable, welcoming, gastronomic, restful, blissful. A perfect place for a quiet romantic getaway with your wonderful woman!” - Wellington, New Zealand

“We recently spent 8 days in Sonoma and on the coast for our anniversary. The Raford Inn is by far the best place we stayed. It's set out in the country … and yet close to everything in the area such a good wineries, good restaurants - even the coast. It's a beautiful home nestled into beautifully landscaped grounds, with a large wrap-around porch overlooking vineyards and some smaller individual patios. What really makes the Raford Inn a treasure are the owners Dane & Rita who obviously enjoy extending generous hospitality - every part of your stay there reflects that, from the lovely rooms with little extra touches, fabulous breakfasts, enjoyable evening social time on the porch, anything helpful they can do ie: making reservations...all done with such warmth and friendliness. It helped make our time there very romantic and memorable.” - Durango, Colorado

“I could go on and on about how wonderful the Raford Inn is, you'll be missing out if you miss staying here!” - Santa Cruz, California

“The rooms were impeccably clean and neat, they gave us a champagne toast at breakfast the day we got engaged, there were wine tastings both nights (with the winemakers doing the pouring themselves) and their recommendations for restaurants, relaxation on the river, etc. were fantastic. A truly dynamite experience and one we will surely repeat!” - San Francisco, California

“The Raford Inn was bar none the greatest lodging experience we have ever had.” - Andover, Minnesota

“My company produces high-end customer service training for big luxury hotels. Because of that, I've become something of a service connoisseur, and I must say that everyone at the inn impressed me with their warm authentic service attitudes. I was especially taken with the two young gals who served breakfast (and sang) on Friday morning. They were so cute and so comfortable in their roles. Having battled in the trenches of large hotel service it's a rare pleasure to see great service seemingly effortlessly delivered. We also loved the way the proprietors introduced the breakfast each morning. Warm and welcoming - and authentic! It's ironic that the most influential factor in shaping a guest's intent to return to a hotel is personalized service and staff engagement - both of which don't cost anything - and yet very few operations get it right. The folks at the Raford Inn get it right!” - San Francisco, California

SANTA NELLA HOUSE

In evaluating the quality of inns, most people look for the setting. Some the feast. But at Santa Nella, while the previous criteria excels, the quality of the hosts and guests predominate. A happy home, attracts happy people. Thank you so much for the experience. Stephanie George and Lauren Wise

Thank you for the perfect spot to relax after our daughters wedding. It is true, it was like we were visiting friends. The evening wine, nightly snacks and fabulous breakfast are all that had been written about. We will come back and will encourage everyone we hear coming to Sonoma county, to experience this wonderful B+B. Leaving too soon, with a wonderful memory. Barry and Joni – Larchmont, NY

Thanks to Bob and Betsy for sharing their home and hospitality with us. It was all we expected and more! We especially enjoyed the delicious breakfasts and baked goodies. The afternoon wine with friendly chats was wonderful too. Thanks again. Bill and Susan Hughes – Friendswood TX

Thanks for the most relaxing, friendly visit. We’ve been to many B+B’s and you rate in the top three for sure. We’ll be back with some friends. Debbie and Jeff – Princeton NJ

Every detail of our stay was absolutely lovely, from the beautiful house to the scrumptious breakfasts, to the warm hospitality. Thank you so much for making this a delightful vacation. Karen and Jason – San Francisco, CA

"Thanks to our wonderful hosts, Bob and Betsy, for the weekend stay at Santa Nella House. They only have four rooms, and our group took three of them, but the other folks we met at this quiet, peaceful, and convenient B & B were friendly and interesting to converse with. Bob shares his wines and cheeses, has superb suggests for dinner (such as the Mosaic restaurant in Forestville--try the coffee-encrusted filet...yum! and reasonable prices for the wines!), and is very, very knowledgeable about the MANY things to do (places to drive to, hikes, wineries, etc.) in this great spot. Betsy and Bob put on a FEAST for breakfast (ask Bob about his hot potatoes!) and you have not lived until you have had Betsy's coffeecake. As you can tell, we all loved it and would go back in a minute." - Rico, Northern California

"After three days of feeling pampered and reveling in the most special B&B, one would think the "highs" would subside. Not the case here. Bob and Betsy top it all with French Toast Bananas Foster. Extra-ordinary! The best B&B I have ever had the pleasure to visit. Fabulous hosts." - John Zaccaro, Palos Verdes, California
"What fabulous hosts you are. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality. The food and accommodations were first- class and beyond." - Mike & Cathy Henney, Louisville, Kentucky

"We came to explore the Russian River area, looking for a place far away from worries and busyness. We found it! Beyond being quiet in a very charming setting, Bob and Betsy were truly remarkable hosts: Friendly, accommodating and made us feel at home all the time. And their French toast is truly superb. We look forward to coming back." - Louis Morjales and Alexandra Breach, Campbell, CA

THE SHELFORD HOUSE

We didn't believe all of the "5" ratings... (Oct 5, 2007): ...until we arrived. The Shelford House is a perfectly charming B&B in a quaint California town. It was really nice seeing the vineyards directly adjacent to the grounds. The innkeepers were knowledgeable and all too happy to make recommendations. We stayed in the Sarah Room which was comfortable and clean as well as the common area with coffee maker, games, and tv. I don't understand why anyone would come here to watch television, but to each his own. The breakfast was delicious and on time. All in all, this a great B&B for the price and location. We look forward to a repeat visit. - Brisbane, Austrailia

Super charming, super sweet owners, very homey (Sep 30, 2007): Great place, very charming. Warm cookies greeting you in the PM. Owners really enjoy what they do and it shows. Only minus - one a road with a fair amt of traffic. if you were in the city you wouldn't notice it, but since it's so quiet otherwise, you can hear the cars go by if you have the windows open. If you get a room more on the back of the house, maybe you wouldn't hear it. loved the place overall though. - Santa Ana, CA

Felt completely at home, London, United Kingdom (Sep 12, 2007): We chose a trip to Sonoma as part of our honeymoon road trip having been deterred by reports that Napa has become 'touristy', and against that backdrop we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay than the Shelford Inn. It is located surprisingly conveniently for highway 101, yet it seems like it's in a different world. Surrounded by vineyards but within extended walking distance of the small town of Cloverdale (which has a couple of really good restaurants), we felt like we were staying with friends such was the welcome and attention to detail that innkeepers Anna and Stan paid. The room was beautiful, the homemade breakfasts were amazing and the tips for which vineyards to visit were absolutely spot-on. We will be back and we are lobbying friends and relatives to visit too. We can't recommend it highly enough. - London

Great stay! (Sep 3, 2007): Hosts Stan and Anna were very friendly and provided a great breakfast and good sightseeing advice. We were there in the midst of a heat wave, but the air-conditioning in our room was sufficient, though the bathroom was like a sauna. The room was very comfortable. If I were to visit the area again, I would probably try to find something closer to Healdsburg, even if it were a hotel (as opposed to a B&B) in the cute town. The town of Cloverdale itself isn't even worth stepping into. There are some wineries here, but most are about 15-20 minutes south, in and around Healdsburg. Same with restaurants. And we had a great few hours one afternoon at the local indian casino (though it is admittedly an eyesore, during the day and particularly at night!) On the other hand, a stay at the Shelford is like a home away from home, cute, nice views of vineyards. One guest was using it as a base for bike rides around the area, which was an ideal idea. - Eureka, CA

Charming B&B tucked away amongst the vineyards (June 2006): "We just returned from our stay at the Shelford House and really loved it! Stan and Anna are really wonderful innkeepers and have a lot of pride in their place. It is a charming B&B that is a cozy spot away from it all - tucked right into the vineyards. The house has a wrap-around deck, from which you can see their beautiful garden, grape-covered gazebo, wine-barrel water fountain, miles of vineyards, & the beautiful mountains of Sonoma beyond. The rooms are clean & well-decorated with antique photographs and lots of special extras - like our brass sink! What's great is that you can appreciate a country-feel while still enjoying modern essentials, like LCD tvs and wireless internet inside and outside! The classic Victorian parlor is full of great books and wine magazines. But the best part was the gourmet breakfasts in the morning - Anna literally picks the fruit fresh from her garden each morning and she serves all her scrumptious recipes on fine china in the elegant dining room. All the little touches make such a difference! She and Stan are experienced wine-lovers and had great recommendations on the wineries we should visit - they even provided us w/ maps of the area, spreadsheets of winery-specific info, and a pass for free tastings everywhere! Where else can you find that?! The Shelford House was an amazing experience, and we would do it again in a heartbeat. Cloverdale is about 15 min north of Healdsburg, and there are plenty of wineries to visit within 15-30min driving distance from the B&B, although the Sonoma Valley wineries take a little longer to reach. If you decide to stay here, we'd recommend "Santi", an upscale Italian restaurant in nearby Geyserville!" - Portland, OR

Honeymoon memories in Vineyard Retreat Suite (March 2006) "I'm writing this review almost two years after our visit to the Shelford House because the memories have stuck with us. I'm planning a vacation in another area and am hoping to find a B&B that measures up to this one. My new husband and I stayed in the vineyard retreat suite. If you go to their website you can see the clawed tub/jacuzzi in the middle of the hardwood floor near French doors that open onto a small private deck that overlooks a vineyard, where you can sit in your bathrobe (bring your own) or pjs and enjoy the morning sunshine. This room is set apart from the main house, but I believe there may be guests staying upstairs in this suite. We stayed for two nights and enjoyed breakfast with the friendly innkeeper and a few other guests. One morning for Memorial Day, she had breakfast on red and white antique china that she collected and another morning it was pink china. I'm not a huge china freak, but the table setting made breakfast extra special. Breakfast itself was fantastic. One morning we had French Toast of some sort, except that instead of bread, it was croissants. Another morning it was quiche or some sort of egg dish. There were always other items like muffins, yogurt, and fruit and of course coffee and juice. Nearby we really enjoyed the Preston vineyard, which is in a rural setting and loved their wine and olive oil. I think they have a picnic area too. Double check to make sure it's allowed. The innkeeper was very helpful in suggesting vineyards and restaurants to visit. We didn't plan these in advance, but found her advice to be spot-on." - New York, NY

VINTAGE TOWERS INN

"The Vintage Towers Inn....what a terrific B&B! (Nov 1, 2007) Tripadvisor Rating: 5.0 - My wife and I were traveling with another couple and we ALL fell in love with this B&B. My wife and I stayed in the Judith's Towers Suite and our friends in the Vintage Towers Suite. Each room was very spacious and very very clean, each with their own charm and personality. Every morning coffee was prepared and available in a little room upstairs, with homemade brownies and assorted goodies. Breakfast was prepared fresh, hot and excellent. We were scheduled for an early morning spa one day and cancelled it because we did not want to miss the awesome breakfast! Many ingredients were grown at the inn. The innkeepers, Don & Mary were such a delight, very helpful and every recommendation was on the mark! Each night, Don would set up a fire for us and we would all relax by the fire drinking our wine of the day! Just an incredible experience!!!" - New York

"Loved the Vintage Towers... (Oct 15, 2007) Tripadvisor Rating: 5.0 -This was our 1st visit to the wine country and we sure made a wise decision by picking the Vintage Towers to stay at. We were greated by Don, one of the owners, who helped us with our luggage and showed us everything available at the Towers. He made us feel at home immediately. In addition, he is so knowledgeable about the entire area. He marked a map for us so we knew where we were going the next morning plus gave us coupons for free wine tasting. The recommendation for dinner in Cloverdale was absolutely wonderful!! One of the best meals we have ever had in our travels, the Piacere. The breakfast at Vintage Towers was also very good and both Don & Mary made us feel so welcome. Their gardens are beautiful. We are already planning another trip to the wine country within the next 2 yrs. and will definitely stay at the Vintage Towers again but for 2 nights this time." - Ohio

"Great Stay in Cloverdale area..(Aug 15, 2007) Trip Advisor Rating: 5.0 - This is a registered historic grand mansion in a quiet residential neighborhood in the town of Cloverdale. We felt very at home and welcome in the many common rooms. Downstairs parlor with comfy sitting for a good movie or upstairs library for reading. Also an upstairs "Sun room" to get early or late coffee, tea and cookies etc. Also a mini-frig and ice machine to use...

Breakfast is served at 9 o'clock sharp, group style at the large dining table with exquisite place settings and wonderful fresh gourmet food. Quite the elegant affair..Complete with homemade orange-cranberry scones! Hearty portions to take you way past lunch....We enjoyed chatting with others at breakfast.

There are many lovely outdoor sitting areas with which to relax. The 3 resident kitty cats love petting and lap sitting. So you won't miss yours so badly..Theres a Koi pond and many bubbling fountains too.The many flower gardens are sooo nice, complete with fruit trees and veggie garden...." - Fort Bragg, CA
